Original 1927 Vitrolite Architectural Glass Brick Piece

A Rare Piece of American Architectural History

Own a remarkable piece of Chicago architectural history with this original Vitrolite architectural glass, dating to 1927 and originating from the historic Avalon Regal Theater.

During recent construction and restoration work at the Theater, these original Vitrolite elements were discovered concealed beneath decades of subsequent renovations and restoration work. Hidden from view for generations, their discovery revealed a remarkable surviving piece of the building's original 1927 architectural fabric.

Installed as part of the Theater's original construction, this material represents the distinctive craftsmanship and sophisticated design sensibilities of the golden age of American movie palaces. Nearly a century later, these surviving architectural elements offer a tangible connection to the vision of renowned theater architect John Eberson and one of the city's most celebrated Chicago Landmarks.

The Material and Its Legacy

Vitrolite is a distinctive opaque architectural glass prized for its smooth, polished surface, rich visual character, and versatility in decorative applications. Popular throughout the early and mid-20th century, it became an important element in the architectural language of theaters, commercial interiors, and sophisticated public spaces.

Vitrolite is no longer manufactured, making surviving original examples increasingly distinctive and collectible. Once a defining feature of early 20th-century architecture, this discontinued material represents a manufacturing tradition that has largely disappeared.

Unlike contemporary architectural materials or reproductions, these original 1927 pieces possess something that cannot be recreated: authentic material from an extraordinary period in American architectural history, with a direct connection to the Avalon Regal Theater.
